Neato Custom - Firmware

Change the DNS settings on your home router. Point the Neato cloud URLs to your local server IP address.

Enter the world of custom firmware and open-source modifications. By modifying your Neato’s software, you can break free from corporate cloud dependencies, enhance local privacy, and breathe new life into older hardware.

Responsive web interface, local map viewing, and native MQTT support.

Neato Robotics manufactured some of the most capable hardware in the smart vacuum world. However, with the company shutting down cloud operations, many owners face bricked devices or limited features. Custom firmware breathes new life into these machines. It disconnects them from dead corporate servers and grants total local control.

Because the underlying operating system is proprietary and utilizes secure bootloaders on custom TI chips, a true "from-scratch" open-source firmware replacement is currently unavailable. Instead, the community has focused on two primary paths: Neato Botvac D3, D3 Pro, D4, D5, and D7 Firmware - GitHub neato custom firmware

Back in the late 2020s, the golden age of robot vacuums had curdled into a cynical silver age. Neato Robotics, once beloved for their distinctive D-shape and laser-mapping “Botvision,” had been acquired by a conglomerate more interested in harvesting user floorplan data for targeted advertising than in clean corners.

Ironically, the cloud shutdown itself presents a bricking risk. Firmware with cloud heartbeat mechanisms may trigger a "disable_device" function if cloud servers are unreachable. This is why patching firmware to redirect or disable cloud authentication calls is important for long-term reliability.

Some community projects aim to keep the cleaning logic but remove the cloud dependency.

If you want to start modifying your specific vacuum model, let me know: What do you own? Change the DNS settings on your home router

You control the vacuum via the microchip, rendering the official cloud completely unnecessary. Method 2: Firmware Patching and DNS Redirection

Users patch the internal configuration files to point cloud requests away from Neato's servers.

The open-source community has developed powerful solutions to liberate Neato hardware. The exact firmware you choose depends heavily on your specific vacuum model. 1. Valetudo (via Bumper/Hypfer)

Load the compiled open-source binary via your serial tool. Flash it directly onto the microcontroller memory bank. Risks and Challenges By modifying your Neato’s software, you can break

Moving away from stock software means losing the official Neato app. You will need to get comfortable using web-based dashboards or Home Assistant cards instead. The Verdict: Is It Worth It?

Unlike "jailbreaking" a smartphone, which often voids warranties for the sake of piracy or customization, Neato custom firmware was born from a desire to fix persistent software bugs, improve navigation logic, and add features that Neato never officially implemented.

Some enthusiasts have gone further, designing custom rigid-flex PCBA boards that mount directly on the robot's bumper, providing a clean, permanent installation.
